Located at 2015 Asheville Highway in Hendersonville NC, the Studio is designed for accessibility, with ample parking, a loading dock, and ramp access. Members of the Stuart Glassman Clay Studio also benefit from exclusive opportunities to exhibit their work at the Art League’s Art Place Gallery in Hendersonville’s 7th Avenue Historic District, the city’s emerging arts hub.

Beyond member access, the Studio offers opportunities for artists to teach and take classes, building a robust cycle of creative exchange. The Art League is also expanding its team of studio assistants to support the growth of programs and maintain safe, professional facilities.

What We Require for Open Studio Membership

Foundational Ceramics Experience

  • Basic understanding of clay processes and ceramic fundamentals

  • Experience working with clay independently

  • Familiarity with basic handbuilding and/or wheel throwing techniques

Ceramics Knowledge

  • Understanding of different clay bodies and their uses

  • Knowledge of the stages of clay, including drying, leather hard, bone dry, and finished work

  • Basic understanding of firing processes and glazing techniques

Studio Safety & Responsibility

  • Understanding of proper studio safety practices

  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace

  • Knowledge of safe handling of clay, tools, equipment, glazes, and studio materials

Community Mindset

  • A friendly, respectful, and collaborative attitude

  • Willingness to contribute to a clean, safe, and welcoming shared studio environment

  • Respect for other artists, their work, and the studio space

Open Studio Membership is designed for artists who are able to work independently and safely without ongoing instruction. Members should have a basic understanding of ceramic processes, studio equipment, and safe studio practices.

If you are new to clay, we recommend starting with one of our classes before joining Open Studio. Our classes provide a great foundation in clay techniques, equipment use, and studio procedures.

The latest expansion includes a new Members’ Area, offering 24/7 studio access for ceramic artists while creating separate workshop and classroom spaces. This enhancement supports both professional and recreational potters by providing a focused, well-equipped environment for artistic growth.

Key upgrades include:

  • Additional Upgraded Skutt Kiln capable of larger works

  • New slab roller, doubling capacity for hand-building projects

  • Additional Brent CXC wheels, expanding opportunities for wheel-throwing

  • Extruder for special projects

  • Hot Box for quick drying

  • Glazing Room fully stocked with dips and commercial glazes

  • Tools, wide selection 

  • Expanded work tables, wedging stations, and storage — more than doubling members’ space for tools, materials, and works-in-progress.
